Shane Matthew Ryan, well known Seattle area chef, died unexpectedly at his Burien home on June 5, 2023. Shane was born on July 28, 1979, in Portland, Oregon to Dave and Melanie Ryan. His younger sister, Ashley Rose Ryan was born in 1982. Shane attended high school in Tacoma and Montana and graduated from the Culinary Arts program at South Seattle College.
Shane worked in many Seattle restaurants including Café Campagne and How to Cook a Wolf as well as Joel Robuchon in Las Vegas. In July 2007 he married Rebecca Paul and together they traveled the world as Shane worked as a Chef in restaurants in Bhutan and St. Maarten before moving back to the Seattle area where he eventually became Executive Chef at Matt’s in the Market. In 2015 the absolute light of his life was born and named Maya Jean Ryan. He opened Upper Left Catering and saw his dream fulfilled of owning his own restaurant when he opened Osprey Bistro in South Park in 2020.
Shane was predeceased by his parents and his sister, Ashley. He will be greatly missed by Rebecca and Maya, as well as his aunts Maureen and Jeanne Ryan, Rebecca’s parents, Janet and Blair Paul, all of Rebecca’s family, and all those who knew him including so many in the restaurant community.
